Technical Abstract

The Doctorate of Nursing Practice is a practice-focused doctoral degree that educates advanced practice nurses to become expert clinicians, leaders in health care policy, and advocates for improved health care delivery within an interprofessional health care system. The DNP professional provides evidence-based interventions and best practices to support individuals, families, and populations and to maximize health care outcomes. In addition, DNP''s will be able to use technology, biostatistics, and business management strategies to provide quality care and promote efficient use of resources. I am very excited about completing my doctoral education at Saint Louis University where there is a long and successful track record of excellence of nursing education at the graduate and doctoral level. The DNP program at Saint Louis University has an overall goal of risk reduction in the health care of a specialized population that the individual DNP student chooses as their focus. My focus is the care of children and adolescents with cancer. All course work and clinical hours that I complete in the DNP program will be directly applied to the care of children and adolescents with cancer and their health care needs. I have been in the field of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology for more than 30 years. I have practiced as an Advanced Practice Nurse for 20 years and provided care to children and adolescents and their families who''s lives have been forever altered by a diagnosis of childhood cancer. I am also an experienced nurse researcher and I have completed 2 studies on the management of acute and delayed vomiting associated with chemotherapy. My current work in the DNP program is the development of a tool for nutritional screening for children receiving chemotherapy, and to initiate early intervention strategies for children at risk for malnutrition during treatment. I have already started work on development of the tool and completed a small pilot study in my first semester of the DNP program. Support from the American Cancer Society through the Graduate Scholarship in Cancer Nursing Practice will allow me to achieve my goals of continuing to work with children and adolescents with cancer, and providing them and their families with highly competent, truly compassionate health care, and a superior experience with the health care team. In addition, through my clinical and research efforts, I hope to develop strategies that improve the quality of life for children with cancer and that reduce their risks of complications from the treatment. I would be very honored to represent the American Cancer Society as the focus of my career has been with children and their families faced with a life-changing diagnosis of cancer and my hope is that I can lessen their suffering, and make a difference in their lives through a highly specialized DNP degree with a focus on pediatric cancer.
